According to the 2007 House Report, the EFCA was designed to allow “employees to make their own decision about whether they want to bargain together—to advocate for fairer wages, benefits and working conditions—without the threat or fear of harassment and retribution and fear of losing their livelihood.” In the most simple terms, Unions want the bill to pass because it allows workers an easier way to unionize. The opposition argues that the EFCA will allow for open balloting, as opposed to secret balloting, which will make it easier for the unions to strong arm individuals opposed to the union.
Enter Joe the (fake) Plumber. In advance of the event, Mary Ellen Burke, spokesperson for the anti-EFCA group Americans for Prosperity said:
“The public loves Joe the Plumber,” … “They see him as a role model.”
Asked whether Joe the Plumber had any particular knowledge or expertise about EFCA that might explain the decision to enlist him, Burke said that he was being enlisted to provide a “grassroots perspective” and “the working perspective” on the measure.
So Americans for Prosperity hustle Joe off to Harrisburg, PA, right into a buzz saw! Watch!
It appears the Joe wasn’t as prepared as he should have been. Doesn’t this remind you of the hijack he ran on Obama during the election? That said, Obama handled Joe’s question a whole lot better than Joe handles the above. Oh, and Obama answered Joe’s question too.
My initial thought is to say put this guy away and never let him see the light of day. But then I change my mind as I think about all the fun we’d miss out on!
